ALAJUELA, Costa Rica - Anakaren Llamas scored in the 42nd minute and Mexico defeated Canada 1-0 Monday in the final group match at the CONCACAF women’s under-17 championship.
Both teams had already qualified for the tournament semifinals. Canada finished second in its group and will play the United States on Thursday, while Mexico meets Costa Rica in the other semifinal.
The two finalists qualify for the 2010 FIFA under-17 Women’s World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago.
Llamas scored when she struck a free kick from 35 yards out over Canadian goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo and under the crossbar. It was a rare bit of offence during an otherwise tepid opening 45 minutes.
Canada maintained possession for much of the second half and had some chances but couldn’t beat Mexican goalkeeper Cecilia Santiago.
