PAUL, Catherine (also known as Katie) nee Spenst Passed away at Sutherland Hills Rest Home, in Kelowna, BC on Sunday, January 4th, 2009 at the age of 91. Catherine is predeceased by her parents, Jacob and Elizabeth Spenst, brother Jacob Spenst, and sister Ann Garrett. She is lovingly remembered by her son, Donovan Laurie Paul of Kelowna, granddaughter Kim (Stuart) Henderson and two great grandchildren, Chase and Kaitlin, all of Victoria, sister Beth Brown of Kelowna, brother Arthur (Dorothy) Spenst of Abbotsford, sister Esther (Walter) Wecker of Kelowna, sister Marion (Galen) Brown of Idaho, USA, and numerous nieces and nephews. Katie was born in Waldheim, Saskatchewan on July 15th, 1917 to Jacob and Elizabeth Spenst. She was the oldest of 7 children. Katie enjoyed teaching school, first in a one room school house near Bethune, Saskatchewan and then later in a larger three room school in Regina, and Kelowna. Katie married Ivan Paul on May 31st, 1942 - a marriage that lasted four days less then 64 years, when Ivan passed away. Ivan was a farmer for many of those years and Katie helped him with many of the farm chores. They moved to Kelowna in 1979 and during the following years she was very active in the Pathfinder Club for young people for 18 years. Students going to a local school would stay with the Paul’s for the school year. She was also very involved in her church, the Orchard City SDA Church in several capacities. Katie loved to travel and was so happy to share photos and stories about their trips to Europe and Alaska. Her last trip was to Saskatchewan in 2003 for a family reunion of her siblings, and visiting the family’s old home site, schools, and many friends and relatives. After a stroke in 2005, she was wheel chair bound and so she would relive the trips through her photo album and visits with her sister, Esther. Katie cherished visits from her family members, church friends and neighbors in her community. A Funeral service will be held on Thursday, January 8th, 2009 at 1:00 P.M. at Orchard City Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1710 Garner Road Kelowna. Viewing will be made available one hour prior to service. Katie will be laid to sleep following the service at Kelowna Memorial Park Cemetery. Katie now sleeps and awaits the coming of Jesus. TROTTER, CAROL
TROTTER, CAROL ELIZABETH (GILLIES) 1956-2009 Carol passed away suddenly from a medical condition on January 3rd, 2009, leaving those who loved her shocked and deeply saddened. Many mourn her. Her husband Dan Trotter and children Kelly and Beau, who cherish a wonderful, loving, caring wife and Mom. She was a joyful daughter to Elizabeth and shining light in the lives of her two brothers Scott and Gord. She quickly became the same with the Trotter family when she married the love of her life in Dan. Carol grew up in SW Calgary where her constant smile and outgoing personality made it impossible not to like her. She just had it all. But it was her kindness and caring that made you love her. She graduated from Viscount Bennett in 1974 and went on to become a flight attendant for Wardair, which enabled her to see the world. It was while based in Toronto that a ’chance’ encounter with her high school ’crush’, would lead to a magical life together in BC. The Trotter home and acreage in Summerland was Grand Central Station for family and friends. A gathering place for celebrations, birthdays, and legendary Easter egg hunts. Everyone was welcome, there was always room to crash, and it was constantly filled with laughter. Carol was the ringmaster of a home that was always growing. Her love for animals would lead to the funniest conversations: "You’ve got to get out here-we’ve adopted a Llama!" You just never knew what you’d find each visit and you couldn’t help but get swept up in her enthusiasm. She seemed constantly on the lookout to do things that would bring joy into the world. Carol loved her life in BC and was always volunteering in the community to make it a better place. She made many special friends everywhere she went. Only Carol could pull off having a shrine to her beloved Calgary Flames prominently displayed at work, deep in the heart of Vancouver Canuck country. Carol was completely dedicated to family. She put on a million miles driving up and down the Okanagan for hockey, soccer or baseball games. Kelly and Beau were her life and she loved every minute of it. She was so proud of them. She walked a million miles hand in hand with Dan as they toured their property and lived their dreams. We are all truly stunned with her untimely death. It just doesn’t seem possible. She was such a positive presence in all our lives. Deep down we know the great pain we struggle with today, is just another expression of the powerful and undying love we share for a very special woman. Our Carol. A memorial service for Carol Trotter will be held Friday, January 9th at 1:00 p.m. at Summerland United Church, 13204 Henry Avenue.
